The K.B.N Paradise farmhouse: a white single-storey villa with Ionic columns and the name lettered in gold across the pediment, standing behind a red brick-paved courtyard under a clear sky.

Eight kanal of open country, an easy escape from the city.

A private walled farmhouse near Lahore: pool, grill pavilion, lawns, and a three-bedroom house you can take for the week.

An acre of country, kept private.

K.B.N Paradise is a farmhouse in open farmland outside Lahore. Eight kanal — exactly one acre — walled the whole way round, laid to lawn and garden, built around a single-storey house with a pool at its edge and a covered pavilion for the evening.

It was made for the way families here actually spend a day out of the city: water in the afternoon, cricket on the grass, fire after dark, and enough ground between you and the road that the traffic stops existing. When the light goes, the whole place comes up in gold.

Water and fire.

The swimming pool at K.B.N Paradise, tiled in deep blue mosaic, with a raised shallow bathing corner for children at one end, bordered by red brick paving and open lawn.

The pool

Mosaic-tiled in deep blue and five and a half feet at its deepest, with jets along one wall and a raised shallow corner set aside for children. It sits straight on the lawn, and it is lit after dark.

The covered grill pavilion at dusk: a lit pergola over a circular fire pit in full flame, a domed tandoor oven behind it, chairs drawn up around, with palm trees and an apricot sky beyond.

The pavilion

A covered pavilion built around an open fire pit, with a tandoor oven, a grill, a stove, a fridge and a sink along the back, and seating all the way round. The lights come on at dusk, and that is usually where the evening ends.

Everything on the acre.
